BRIEF RULEBOOK -------------- NBA players will be drafted by league members as soon the week of October 15th starts. The league will probably consist of about 20 members distributed into 2 conference of 2 divisions. Drafting will happen over a 2-3 week span, to allow time to fill all teams' rosters. Once all league members have declared "eligibility" (send me a message if you don't want to participate in the league), a draft order will be created. The first pick overall can choose any player in the NBA for their team; and, in order, the rest of the members choose a player until the first round is over. The order of the second round will be the reverse of the first, so the player who picks last in the first round picks first in the second round. A new order will be picked for every two rounds. Drafting will take place as follows: 1. You will receive a message (e-mail and/or phone) with the draft order. 2. Be aware of players you may be able to draft at your given position (for help, see below for last years statistics and rankings). 3. When it is your turn to draft, e-mail and/or phone PBUTLER@EAGLE.WESLEYAN.EDU or (203) 685-5084 with your pick. 4. After each pick, the complete draft up to that point will posted on the World Wide Web at http://pbutler.stu.wesleyan.edu/fantasy.html and will be e-mailed to all members. The next person in the draft will get a notification message with a reminder to pick. 5. *** DO NOT WASTE TIME *** Yes, everyone has a schedule and can only e-mail or phone in their picks at certain times, but we need 100% prompt participation to make this work. EVERYONE else in the league is dependent on your timing. Hopefully, we can get between 5 and 10 picks a day. You will be able to judge when you might have to pick by the draft order, so please be prepared, or have someone else prepared to draft when it's your turn. 6. There will hopefully be 8-10 full rounds of picks before the season starts the first week of November. SCORING ------- Each team will consist of a starting five (2 guards, 2 forwards and a center) as well as a sixth man of any position and a 7th and 8th man of a position different from the sixth. Each game, your players will receive a point value that is equal to the sum of: Points scored, Total Rebounds, Assists, Steals and Blocks Your starting five and your sixth man will count all stats towards these points, while your 7th and 8th men will receive 50% of stats. The sum of the points of your team members will constitute your score for a given game (if it's your third game for instance, the stats of your players' third games, although they may be different, will be counted). If you score higher than your opponent for a given game, you win. Later, there will be adjustments for home/away stats. There will be a 56-game season based on the first 56 games of the NBA season and 4-rounds of playoffs based on the last 26. HELP ---- I know some of you are avid hoops fans and know of all players in the league, and I also know that some of you are not. For this reason, I have compiled a list of last year's stats with every player in the NBA ranked in order of the exact statistics we will count this year. This will aid you in your quest to pick up that scrub guard you'll be looking for. You can already find this information using Netscape, Mosiac or Lynx to access the World Wide Web at http://pbutler.stu.wesleyan.edu/fantasy.html, or you can e-mail or phone me to receive the stats electronically or in hard-copy. THINGS TO KNOW -------------- Besides being aware of the draft, you must also realize that each team needs to decide and notify me of: A TEAM NAME A TEAM LOCATION (any city in North America) OWNER(s) NAME(s) OWNER E-MAIL/REAL MAIL ADDRESS OWNER PHONE NUMBER AN OPTIONAL TEAM LOGO (on paper of file) Right now, we are trying to decide on an entry and/or if any is needed. Most likely, it will be $10 and the prizes will be distributed: DIVISION WINNERS (4) : $10 ADVANCE TO PLAYOFFS (16): $0 ADVANCE TO 2nd ROUND (8): $5 ADVANCE TO 3rd ROUND (4): $10 ADVANCE TO FINALS (2): $20 CHAMPION (1): $40 In effect, the champion will could get the $10 division title and the playoff prizes of $5, $10, $20 and the title prize of $40 for a total of $85. Let me know how you feel about this distribution. I'm at PBUTLER@EAGLE.WESLEYAN.EDU http://pbutler.stu.wesleyan.edu/fantasy.html Pat Butler, Wes Box 4172, Middletown, CT 06459-4172 Thanks for your help and be ready to draft soon! Pat ------MORE MESSAGES OF SIGNIFICANCE--------- By now, most of you might be wondering how we are going to start the season. For the first game (and every game) you will need to declare your starting lineup, particularly, who will fill each position. Remember points earned are the sum of rebounds, blocks, assists, steals, and points. The distribution is as follows: Guard 1 (starting guard) - ALL points for this player count Guard 2 (starting guard) - ALL points for this player count Forward 1 (starting forward) - ALL points for this player count Forward 2 (starting forward) - ALL points for this player count Center 1 (starting center) - ALL points for this player count ---------------------------------------------------------- ANY POSITION (6th man) - ALL points for this player count Position different from 6th (7th man) - HALF points for this player count Position different from 6th (8th man) - HALF points for this player count ---------------------------------------------------------- ANY POSITION (optional 9th man) - NO points count ANY POSITION (optional 10th man) - NO points count If you have a question as to positioning of a particular playing, consult our Positioning Verification Commissioner, Jeffers Egan (685-4589). After the lineup is declared, it will remain the same until it is asked to be change. IMPORTANT: *** DEADLINES!!! *** ***NOTE: THIS RULE HAS BEEN CHANGED, SEE BELOW FOR DETAILS*** All lineups can be changed at any time. But, since each player might be playing the same game on different nights, there can be no ONE specific deadline that is closer than two weeks to the game played. SO, each player that changes will start their new point distribution at the START of his next game. Examples: You have A.C. Green at 6th man, counting for full stats until December 8th, but you want to change him to 7th man and count him half stats at 7:31 pm on December 8th when A.C. and the Suns play a game at 9:00pm that night. A.C.'s stats for that game will count half, because it was declared in time. This will, however, affect a fantasy game that probably won't be played for another few days -- so, if it looks like the stats are being updated in time, this is the cause. And, if A.C.'s game happened to start at 7:30pm on the 8th (actually, scheduled to start), A.C. would be counted full stats and would not be counted half until his next game because the request was not made in time. Even though the draft isn't completely finished (soon enough, soon enough), you should be to declare your initial starting lineup soon. Please e-mail me (PBUTLER@PICASSO.CSLAB.WESLEYAN.EDU) or call ((203)685-5084) to tell me what's up. This first lineup MUST be declared by 7:30pm ET on Friday, November 4th, or I will make up a lineup for your team based on the order of your picks. PLEASE be on time. As for free agents: once the draft is finished, anybody at anytime can drop and pick up players. Any player that is not on a fantasy team can be picked up, though NO MORE THAN 10 PLAYERS CAN OCCUPY one fantasy team. First come, first serve basis -- based on e-mail or phone message time stamp... Thanks, and good luck... Pat ------------ After further consideration, I've decided to incorporate a "deadline" for declaring lineup's for each and every game. This contradicts my last message in that all changes must be made by the deadline, and not game-time. The deadline for each game will be the start of the first corresponding NBA game, regardless of team. For example: The deadline for the 9th game might be 7:30pm, Dec 2nd because that's the time Houston starts their 9th game, which is the first 9th game of any team. Reasons for this new deadline format: theoretically, with the old format teams could switch players slyly enough to count everyone for full stats (if you don't believe me I'll explain it to you). With the new format, all teams are guaranteed the correct point distribution for EVERY game. One drawback: Sometimes the deadline might seem to far from the fantasy game to allow for appropriate changes...but, what seems like two weeks is actually anywhere from 0 minutes to two weeks... If it all seems really complicated, I understand...believe me, I've tried to think of a better way...suggestions would be appreciated... Just check out the schedule with the new deadlines posted and try to follow those for now. Thanks, Pat ----------------------------------------------------- I've been talking to a bunch of other owners in the league and most people tend to think that players should really start at their actual positions or a position very similar. Due to this fact, a lot of complaints have been made about your starting lineup -- particularly Juwan at C and Jordan at F. I know I talked to you earlier about playing Jordan at F, but I think, at least for the first game, you must play him at guard as well as Juwan at F. Jeffers and I will be watching the games tonight to check up on all the positioning questions so this ruling may change but for now, you've got to find a way around this. Sorry for the inconvenience; if you have any questions/complaints, you can talk to me or Jeffers as we both agree on the issue. Thanks, Pat -------------------------------------------- I've thought it out and have decided that it is fair to declare a sub for each player, to fill in ONLY when they miss a game. Because of the deadlines, it is sometimes impossible to know if a player will miss a game. In addition to your lineup, include a sub for each player (sub lineup and starting lineup should overlap) OR as many players as you want. Deadlines will stay the same. Thanks, Pat -------------------------------------------- The season's up and running and the first game (Nov. 4) is finished and posted. Lineup changes and sub declarations will be accepted at anytime and I now can finally sort things out. The first game had its quirks and it was tough trying to figure everything out, but for now, I think I've got things under control, though it's taken a lot longer than I thought. If you've got any questions, PLEASE ask me, and I'll post any responses. I haven't had time to update the rule-book fully, so the process may still seem a little shady. I'm excited to get things underway. Here's the e-mail list of everyone in the league -- if you've got general concerns, please use it to contact people... AFUYS@EAGLE.WESLEYAN.EDU DBARANOVSKY@EAGLE.WESLEYAN.EDU, DFRANK@EAGLE.WESLEYAN.EDU, DMATUS@EAGLE.WESLEYAN.EDU, EFILIPPI@EAGLE.WESLEYAN.EDU, JBUEHLER@EAGLE.WESLEYAN.EDU, JEGAN@EAGLE.WESLEYAN.EDU, MDHEILMA@STUDENTS.WISC.EDU, MVANNIMWEGEN@EAGLE.WESLEYAN.EDU, PBUTLER@PICASSO.CSLAB.WESLEYAN.EDU PJOSEPHSON@EAGLE.WESLEYAN.EDU, POHARE@EAGLE.WESLEYAN.EDU, RCOHEN@EAGLE.WESLEYAN.EDU, RDLAUER@STUDENTS.WISC.EDU A few things we may want to address: - Money, if and when are we going to collect the pot? what will the distribution of prizes be? - Scoring -- what do you think of the stats? - Commissioners -- I REALLY could use some help with just about everything. I'm the only one who can really update the Netscape pages, but anyone can add up stats and make rulings. Particularly, I could use 2 Statistic Commissioners to help tally stats when I'm really busy (I'll still do it most of the time...) and I need a League Transaction Commissioner (to take care of League transactions) as well as a NBA Transaction Commissioner (to monitor and report NBA transactions). Finally, it'd be cool if someone volunteered to collect money and find a way to decide what the prize distribution will be. I basically just need a little help and I thought a couple of you guys might be interested. Let me know... - Deadlines/Subs - Are there any more complaints? - Logos, etc. - Soon, there will be pictured rosters on the home page That's about it for now...but there's a lot more I'll probably think of... I'm sorry I e-mail everyone so often, it seems to be the only really efficient way of gettings everyone's attention. Hopefully things will run smoothly for a while, Pat -------------------------------- I'm sorry Game 1 got so hairy...maybe some of you didn't notice. Anyway, the program I had planned to use to compile stats really spazzed out on players with more than a first and last name... I think I've fixed everything and the stats reflect all correct final scores. Also, the game scheduled for Nov. 8 is on the 8th only because Miami plays their 2nd game that night, later than everyone else. All but Miami and New Jersey's stats are in, and to get a head start on the anticipated work, I've added a bunch of the games already. What I've done (and I'll do in the future) is post any games that have begun progress on the schedule page. When a game has been completed (all players on both teams have compiled stats) the game will be recorded on the scoreboard and be added to the standings. This way, it is also possible to monitor games in progress. So, if you're wondering how a Nov. 8 game is already finished, this is the reason (check out the stats...there are some really good games). Remember that you can send me ideas for subs and any declarations starting game 4. Essentially, I don't want to count ZEROS for a player that is supposed to start -- if a player doesn't play a game, I'll put in the declared sub, even if it's passed deadlines. Does anybody have any interest in any of the jobs I offered? Plenty of help opportunities are still available. Check out the new Rumor Page to get some ideas for trades... That's about it for now, good luck, and let me know if anything isn't going like you expected... thanks, Pat ---------------------------------- I've stumbled across a few things that have kept the league from running smoothly...maybe I'll start a FAQ sheet, if I have time... but for now here's what come up: Q: How do we determine who get a free-agent just after a team drops him? A: Once the transaction is posted on the home page for 12 hours, he can go to anybody (first come, first serve)...we'll have to decide the details later... Q: Can we BUY players from each other? A: NO! Trades can only be made for players or draft picks (since the draft is over, only players can be traded...) Q: Why not? A: Stacking a team screws everyone else in the league. It's easy to find two people that have two teams and want to join forces, but this is unfair to people in the league with only the resources of one team. The money it costs to get the players is consequential to the prize the team would recieve. Q: How can you tell if "stacking" is taking place? A: If ridiculous trades are being made to the point where a team looks depleted, a league member may choose to protest and bring up a vote to disqualify the owner(s) involved. Q: What's up with the new page? A: Someone didn't have any homework to do last night... Q: How can I get my personalized team logo on the page? A: Find a way to mail it (paper or e-) or post it on the net. It's easiest for me to get a hardcopy of anything you want on your page... Q: Why would want to make a logo or mascot or anything else that's a waste of time? A: It's wicked cool to make fun of other people's logos and I want to add more useless features to the home page. Q: Why does Pat GET to do all the work? A: Oh, you want to help...why didn't you say so...fine, I'll let any of you do the dirty work... Q: How many more stupid questions will Pat ask? A: Only a few. Q: Who exactly is PBUTLER? A: That's me, Pat. Please write me with any questions or comments. Pat ------------------------------------------- Hello all, the commissioning committee has got an idea -- an All-Star Game. Since we've planned the season so that there is one extra game as a tiebreaker, we can use the game soon for the All-Star Game and use Point Average as a tiebreaker. First, each team owner will vote for fifteen players in their conference, in order of preference, any position. All players on rosters within the conference are eligible. The game will feature the American Conference All-Stars vs the National Conference All-Stars with modified lineups. The lineups will be as follow... For both American and National, POS Stats will count Determined by G 100% Top Guard Vote Getter G 100% 2nd Guard Vote Getter F 100% Top Forward Vote Getter F 100% 2nd Forward Vote Getter C 100% Top Center Vote Getter Any 100% Next Highest Vote Getter G 70% Next Highest Guard Vote Getter G 70% Next Highest Guard " " F 70% Next Highest Forward " " F 70% Next Highest Forward C 70% Next Highest Center Any 40% Next Highest Vote Getter Any 40% Next Highest Vote Getter Any 40% Next Highest Vote Getter Any 40% Next Highest Vote Getter Any 40% Next Highest Vote Getter The game will be purely exhibitional, and no stats will count toward regular season standings. Someone suggested that we all add $5 to a pot, and distribute the goods like: Winning team members (8): $8 All-Star MVP, ie highest scorer on winning team (1): $8 3-Point Champion, ie most 3-pointers made (1): $8 The stats will count from a single game, just like they have so far. Ideally, the All-Star game should take place midway through the season, but the would be over winter break. A solution would be to have the game before break so that everyone has time to vote, trash talk, and watch the game progress. Temporarily the game will be set for: DECEMBER 17th which means the deadline for all voting must be this Friday, DECEMBER 8th at 8:00pm. I hope everyone will participate and cast their ballots before the deadline. Also, if you know of an outside neutral party that would like to vote, let me know. The homepage will be updated soon to include an All-Star voting section, so check often. Cheers, and good luck, PB ------------------------------------------- Subject: Voting Hey, maybe I didn't make it clear, but you can only vote for players in YOUR conference. This means that some of you may have to vote again (Derek, Paul!). Also, for those of you that are co-owners, you may vote IN ADDITION to your cohort. We need as many votes as possible. Thanks, don't die Pat ------------------------------------------- Subject: Games 14+ I've got craploads of work to do, so anybody that I showed how to do the stats can start on Games 14, 15, and/or 16. I'll be done with ALL my work next Monday at 2:30ET, so if the stats aren't done by then, they will be, soon thereafter. Some of you may not notice the wait, but I'm just letting those who do know that my professor Ram Subramanyam is the cause of it all, and that's it. I'll stick check e-mail though, Pat ------------------------------------------- *** REMINDER *** The All-Star Ballots are due TONIGHT at 8:00pm ET. If you still want to vote make sure you get the ballots in on time. Also, remember that you can only vote for players in YOUR conference (ie American or National). Those who I have received VALID votes for: Windsor(1), Portland(1), Easton(1), Kailua(1), Madison(1) Those who I have votes for, but have voted for ALL players (wrong): DeKalb J(1), New York(1) Also, ANY OWNER CAN VOTE! If you co-own a team with someone, let them know... Have fun, Pat ------------------------------------------- For those that are interested, I've posted a list of players by conference, alphabetically, on the all-star ballot. Check out the ballot at http://pbutler.stu.wesleyan.edu/basket/allstar.html for more info... Pat ------------------------------------------- I've gotten a bunch of votes in for the All-Star game, but not quite enough to make it worth while. If you haven't voted, you can still do so by TOMORROW, MONDAY 12:00 NOON. I know the form on the page hasn't been working because the mailer at Wesleyan has been down, but everything should work... (if it doesn't, just e-mail me regularly with a list of the top 15 players in your conference) The stats for the last few games will be processed and up tomorrow night! Thanks, Pat ------------------------------------------- ok after all the recent trades its time for another championchip odds session. send in you votes asap! ps vote for yourself-it makes you feel better. pbutler ------------------------------------------- Break is approaching and there are some things we have to discuss. First, I know that I will be spending at least one week over break, if not more, where I will have ZERO access to the internet, and more specifically fantasy basketball. Second, I konw that some of YOU will have 'Net access over break and could possibly help out with stats n' stuff. Please read the info about this on the fantasy page at http://pbutler.stu.wesleyan.edu/basket/break.html. Third, there needs to be some definitive method of timing to transactions and trades. E-mail has worked, and probably will work because every message is time stamped. I'm thinking that if all transactions are sent to ME at pbutler@picasso.cslab.wesleyan.edu, I can have someone else also monitor my e-mail and keep stuff updated. For those of you that won't have internet access, I'll will find some way to mail you hard copies of the standings and stats each week. Please e-mail me your home addresses and I'll take care of it/them. If you can't e-mail me, find a way to send me a message for transactions. I desperately need a substitute commissioner for break. Someone has to take the inititative to keep the league up and running over break because it would be too much work for me to keep the league going if I miss more than six games. Let me know who wants the rock... Any, Happy Holidays, and yes...I have VLADE! ------------------------------------------- This is it... I'm leaving tomorrow at 2:00pm so I will be shutting down my computer then. Check http://www.con.wesleyan.edu/~pbutler/fantasy.html for the moved page. Some of the imagemaps don't work, so here are the URL's of some of the pages you want to see... *** Standings, Scores *** http://www.con.wesleyan.edu/~pbutler/basket/stands.html *** Lineups *** http://www.con.wesleyan.edu/~pbutler/basket/lineups/lineup##.html (## is the game number of the lineup, eg lineup21.html... check mr.html for most recent lineup) *** Schedule, Box Scores *** http://www.con.wesleyan.edu/~pbutler/basket/sched.html *** Transactions *** http://www.con.wesleyan.edu/~pbutler/basket/trans.html *** Rumor Board *** http://www.con.wesleyan.edu/~pbutler/basket/rumor.html *** More Scores *** http://www.con.wesleyan.edu/~pbutler/basket/scores.txt That's most of it... let me know if you want/need any more... Good luck over break, and again, talk to me if you want to help with stats. Pat ------------------------------------------- I'm back, and the league/stats will be too, soon. I'm working on the games that I didn't get to over break, and I expect to be done by this weekend. I'm not going to update the standings and stats until I've finished all the box scores, because I'd be doing too much unneccessary work. But, for those of you who'd like to see the games I've done, check out the schedule/box score page on the fantasy server. I hope everyone had a decent break, and is ready to compete for those playoff spots soon. PBUTLER ------------------------------------------- Yes, that's right. The Fantasy Basketball page is back and up to date. I've split the box scores into seperate sections, because the file was too large to manage. Look at these pages to see each game that happened over break in detail. Check the standings (the top button on the right) to see detailed standings and general scores for all games. Thanks for those that made for a quick and semi-painless "catch-up". Your work is appreciated. Now let's get back to business--- REMEMBER! -Each division winner makes the playoffs as well as the next TWO best from each conference... -A trading deadline will be imposed around game 48 or 50 to eliminate unfair trading late in the season... -It's Vlade Divac's 28th birthday on Feb 2nd... -Transactions and trades will follow the same rules they did the first half of the season... I'll post a few new goodies soon (defensive scores, player rankings, odds, and MAGIC NUMBERS -- right now, Windsor's is ***13***) That's about it for now; let me know if you find any mistakes in the scores for December and January. Thanks, Pat ------------------------------------------- There has been some talk here about trading, deadlines and unfair transactions. I've spoken with some and have a proposal: -The trading deadline with be the same as the deadline for game 43, this Saturday at 8:30pm -EXCEPT for the teams with the five best records in EACH conference. The split is fairly clear cut. These teams can trade until the deadline for game 50, or Feb 15. -Anyone can drop or pick up a player, unless is has been dropped by a team AFTER their trading deadline. The reasons for these rules: A team can sacrifice their squad, and make lopsided trades that may still be passed by the league, especially if a majority of teams have a grudge against a particular team. These rules allow each team enough time to trade what they need without doing this. If you have any questions, or object to this, PLEASE LET ME KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I know it's easy for me to declare these rules, seeing that I'm one of the top five teams in my conference. We will carry out these rules as explained unless at least 8 people object. Thanks for your time, Pat PS Check out the Championship odds page again! We have to start trash talking again soon, so send in your votes! Thanks. ------------------------------------------- The Fantasy Basketball Page has been thoroughly updated. Check out the options that haven't been updated in a while (player rankings, bests, etc.). REMINDER: The trading deadline for those not in the top five in each conference is TOMORROW night at 8:30pm. Thanks Pat ------------------------------------------- I apologize for whining and complaining about my problems to the entire league. I think I might disable the "trash talk" board for a while... nothing good has come of it recently. More importantly, there are a few things to talk about from a league standpoint: 1) Trading deadine for ALL teams (Feb 7th, 8pm) -- This will most likely still stand, and although it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, it will definetly eliminate a small amount of unfair trading. 2) Playoffs - Once again, remember, each division winner goes in addition to the two teams with the best records in each CONFERENCE. The tiebreaker will be points per game average, then if that is within 1 (just to make it a little more fair), head to head competition, followed in turn by conference record, then lowest score (to reward consistency), then highest score, then actual points scored, then rebounds, then assists, then steals and blocked shots. 3) $$$ MONEY $$$ Cash or checks made payable to Pat Butler are acceptable. You can also pay in Vlade Divac trading cards. 4) Spring break - The regular season will end and the playoffs will start over Wesleyan's spring break. I'll keep the stats up on the mirror, and hopefully, things will still run smoothly. 5) Next year - How many of you would be interested in joining the league for next year? Teams would start from scratch again, so this year's results would be negligible. I've also had some requests from others, not in the league this year, to join. What do you think of the number of teams in our league? Should it be higher, lower? Would 25-30 be ridiculous, or would two leagues of 12-15 be better? I'd be interested in hearing your opinions, especially about scoring and stuff. I was thinking of running two leagues -- one identical to the one we had this year, and another, a little bit more complicated (involving salaries, salary caps, revenue, stadiums, home-courts, and profits in addition to stats). Let me know what you might be interested in. And how is $10? That's not much for an entire season. Then again, much more, and this would become pretty serious gambling. 6) The Schedule - A few people have asked questions about the schedule, so I should probably clear it up. The All-Star game pushed all games back by one. In addition, Atlanta, NJ, NY, Orlando, Philly and Seattle were all affected by the blizzard and have had games postponed, pushing there schedule back one too. I will insert their games whenever they are played, in the order they are played. 7) The Fantasy Home Page - what are your thoughts on the page? I basically just worked out a format one time, so the features we use now may not be properly located. Also -- I think I will use the headline for important information, kind of like the stuff I've done with it already. I'm going to add a lot more real soon, so check it often. Would anybody be interested in running a news page? This would slightly resemble the rumor board, but would include anything anybody wanted to post, including pictures. 8) Anything else? I'd like to hear from anyone about any of these issues, so feel free to respond to this letter. Thanks for your time, Pat
